Event information

Family of Polish Jazz is part of a greater project of Clement's Family of Jazz, a documentary of the most important jazz events in Europe over the last 40 years.

Raymond Clement began his jazz photographs adventure in 1970, having been inspired by Duke Ellington’s concert in Wiltz (Luxembourg). He has had his first exhibition of 150 jazz photos in the Town Hall of Place Stanislas during Nancy Jazz Pulsations Festival in 1975. Since then, the Family of Jazz collection only grew, having been constantly supplemented with new works. The exhibition was booked by the biggest photo galleries in Paris, Brussels, New York and Berlin. Currently, part of his collection of photographs is presented in the Abbaye de Neumünster in Luxembourg City.

Part of this project, called Family of Polish Jazz, is dedicated exclusively to Polish jazz musicians. Over many years, and since as early as the 70s, Raymond Clement has been documenting concerts at the Warsaw Jazz Jamboree festivals, as well as smaller projects throughout Poland. He photographed Polish jazz masters: Tomasz Stańko, Zbigniew Namysłowski, Jan Ptaszyn Wróblewski, Zbigniew Seifert, Michał Urbaniak. That has turned into a unique collection of photographs of Polish jazz musicians that has never – on its own – been presented before to the public.

Raymond Clement:

“To see is to hear...” Larry Nylund wrote in large letters in the Reno Evening Gazette when describing the exposition at the University of Nevada: “The Family of Jazz” — a unique collection of pictures by Raymond Clement from the jazz world.

The first great event was the legendary Duke Ellington Orchestra in 1970 in Wiltz, Luxembourg. Since then the collection has been traveling throughout the world. Since 1980, in his photographs of nature and of landscapes, and with his professional 4’x5’, 8‘x10’ and panoramic cameras, Raymond Clement has transformed the early “to see is to hear” into “to see is to feel” (during which time he switched from black-andwhite to colour, and then into digital photography). He owes his international success to his nearness to nature, which he not only can see but also hear and feel: with sensitivity he translates nature’s unique vibrations, signs and sounds into images that are now visible to others.

Event information

For some, it might be difficult to imagine a jazz band composed of a Spanish singer/guitarist, a Polish piano player, a Polish drummer and a Luxembourgish double bass player. Susana Raya and Michał Tokaj met in Żory at International Jazz Days for Singing Musicians Voicingers. In 2012 Marc Demuth (double bass), Michał Tokaj (piano), Sebastian Frankiewicz (drums) were invited to accompany finalists of the competition, while Susana Raya, one of the finalists of the 2010 edition, taught at the workshop coinciding with the competition and festival Voicingers. A great musical complicity between Susana and Michał gave birth to this joint project which had its opening at the Festival in Żory in 2012. Choice of a rhythm section was easy – Sebastian and Marc know each other for years and belong to the most demanded jazz musicians in their countries. The program will combine the band’s own compositions and some rearranged jazz standards. This special rhythmical feel and energy of a Mediterranean soul find the right balance with the landscapes and spacious atmosphere of an East European poet of the piano.

BURN REYNOLDS [PL]

Veteran club and radio DJ, theatrical music arranger; known for his own radio shows, member of the DJ collective Soul Service, with whom he released Polish Funk compilation series with Polish dance music from 60s and 70s. DJ Burn Reynolds plays eclectic mix from soul, funk and disco to rock, jazz and psychedelic sounds all ending.

PAPA ZURA [PL]

Polish DJ and a member of the Soul Service collective. He is a co-authors of the “Polish Funk” record series (released in collaboration with the Polish record Label Polskie Nagrania) including “Why Not Samba” and “Off Season” albums. DJ Papa Zura plays raw funk, afro, soul and rhythm’n’blues records.

SOUL SERVICE

Funk, soul and jazz is the music created to dance and lays beneath all modern dance music. Yet, it is not very popular among the DJs and you can not very often hear it in a club. Poland is not different from the rest of the world - too many pulp DJs following fashions and much too less real music in the clubs. So it was very lucky that four of the most funkiest and musically enhanced Polish DJs met to create a very special collective to promote good vibes to clubs of Poland. For almost 10 years, they have been entertaining parties on their own. So it was very natural to unite and promote under single name: Soul Service.

In search for the best funky tunes, the Soul Service looked into the most secret stash – the old studio of Polish records. For years, they’ve been searching in second hand shops, flea markets and granny’s wardrobes to find Polish record influenced by funk. Soul Service wishes to reveal the power of their homeland beats to the rest of the world. This is the concept behind the “Polish Funk” compilation, brought to the world in cooperation with the Polish oldest record label still on the market – Polskie Nagrania.

Event information: Warsaw Village Band

“Traditional Polish songs, with their cutting vocals and meshed fiddles are the foundation of Warsaw Village Band's repertory. But while their lineup is primarily acoustic – hand drums, hammered dulcimer, violins, cello – their sensibilities are modern. They hear dance-club drive and trance echoes in the songs and they use recording studio techniques to heighten the central drones and eerie percussive sounds in their songs. Hints of reggae and guests like a scratching disc jockey should further infuriate purists.”

The New York Times

The Warsaw Village Band is the best known worldwide Polish folk group. During the 15 years of its career, it has already toured in all the continents. In Luxembourg, the group performed for the first time in 2007 at the Kulturfabrik. The following year, at the Neumünster Abbey they gave the final concert closing the first Festival of Polish Culture. This year, the band will appear in Tramsschapp on Saturday 13th April, in the framework of the third edition of this festival.

Event information: Workshop of Polish traditional folk songs

Folk songs have a thousand-year long history in Poland. They include not only those sang in the country but also tunes that inspired great composers, such as Chopin, Szymanowski or Lutoslawski. The singing is usually accompanied by truly unique Polish folk instruments, like dulcimer or “suka” (Płock fiddle), and they are performed using a special vocal technique called in Polish “śpiewokrzyk” (“white voice”). Participants of this workshop will have an exclusive opportunity to learn the technique of “śpiewokrzyk”, which according to research can also improve one’s performance in other singing styles. It is probably one of the best singing methods teaching to control one's breathing while at the same time keeping perfect command of one’s vocal cords.

During the workshop, the leaders of the Warsaw Village Band – Magdalena Sobczak and Sylwia Świątkowska – will not only teach you their vocal techniques but also accompany the songs playing traditional Polish instruments. The workshop will end on Sunday April 14 with a concert during which the participants will perform on stage together with the band. In addition, all the participants will receive a free ticket for the group’s main concert on April 13. Don’t miss this opportunity to listen and sing together with us in Polish!

The workshop will take place in Polish and English. Upon request, for those who wish to participate but speak neither English nor Polish, a simultaneous translation into French will be provided.

The book “Itinerary resonance: Luxembourg-Paris-Manhattan-Warsaw” reflects the artistic route of Elisabeth Calmes: from Luxembourg, where she was born, via Paris, where she lived and worked, then New York where she was painting for some time, and finally a recent short stay in Warsaw. The artist was brought to Poland by family and emotional ties with this country.

In 2012 the exhibition by Elisabeth Calmes “Itinerary-Luxembourg-Paris-Manhattan” was shown in Poland. On the occasion of the opening of this exhibition the music of a young Polish-Dutch composer Frederik Heringa was performed. This compostion – Itinerary-Luxembourg-Paris-Manhattan-Warsaw – was inspired by Calmes’ paintings and was specially composed for this opening. Inspired by this music, Elisabeth Calmes painted a series of small works on paper or canvas, with very different themes and techniques. The series “Résonnance” is a response to Frederik Heringa’s music which was inspired itself by the Calmes’ art. A true artistic dialogue has happened: “Itinerary-Résonnance”. But the paintings were also inspired by the tragic history of Poland, by the visits of the artist to the Warsaw Uprising Museum and the Chopin Museum, and her meetings with Poles. Having been initially so distant, Poland has penetrated Calmes’ paintings. “Itinerary-Résonnance”, accompanied by the composition of Frederik Heringa, was presented at the Festival de la Francophonie at the Embassy of Luxembourg in Warsaw.

Stanislaw Soyka – singer, instrumentalist, composer – for years one of the greatest artists of the Polish music scene. He writes and sings songs about love and its absence, about longing and irreversibility of events. He doesn’t avoid the great issues of the day either. He’s released more than 35 albums, several of which to multi – platinum audiences. He’s never followed the fashion and trends, and instead he’s developed his own musical language, which made him an artists, whose style is recognisable from the first sounds and the wealth of repertoire can give vertigo.

At the Spring Festival of Poets Festival in Luxembourg Soyka will perform a collection of songs he composed to poems of Polish poets such as: Czesław Miłosz, Wisława Szymborska, Leopold Staff, Halina Poświatowska, Bolesław Leśmian, as well as five William Shakespeare’s sonets. He’ll be backed by Soyka Quintet+, incorporated in 2004 and now featuring: Stanisław Soyka – piano, vocal, Aleksander Korecki – saxophones, flute, Przemek Greger – guitars, Marcin Lamch – double bass, Zbyszek “Uhuru” Brysiak – percussions, Kuba Sojka – drums, vocal, Antoni Sojka – sound and keyboard. Quintet+ plays a kind of chamber pop with influences of jazz and soul as well as traditional Polish music. The band has a rich palette of colours at its disposal, and the musicians’ competences and jazz temperaments can trigger this unique power of improvised music.

Stanisław Soyka is an artist with performer charisma. From the first sounds he attracts the audience’s attention with his masterly singing and guides it through the paths of his sensitivity. Come over and check it out yourself.

The group comprises of its current band members for merely a few months, however, they’ve already accomplished numerous big achievements. In 2012, they’ve played in total more than 50 concerts in Poland, Germany and Canada. They’ve played as a supporting band before world known rock bands such as: Guns’n’Roses, Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Kasabian, H-Blockx, and Paul Rodgers. Their last gig took place in the legendary Horseshoe Tavern in Toronto, where great rock bands including the Rolling Stones and Aerosmith took their first steps on the stage.

On their newest album, which is yet to be released this year, they worked with the best and recorded in the famous Bryan Adams Warehouse Studio in Vancouver, Canada. In an interesting way, Chemia mixes different music styles in its repertoire. In their newest compositions, the influence of rock, grunge, jungle, and even groovy disco can be heard. Currently, the band is in the middle of planning a large concert tour, on which their newest album will be featuring.

Porn Queen is a hard rock band full of energy and enthusiasm. It was created in 2007 by two residents of Luxembourg, Lucas Ferraz (vocals and guitar) and Fred Barreto (guitar) of Brazil. After Yves DeVille (drummer) and Daniel Fastro (bass) of Luxembourg joined the group, the ideal line-up was born. Their music is influenced by 1980's hard rock (Guns'n'Roses, Aerosmith, ....) with a touch of blues and rock’n'roll.

In 2010, the group was the opening act for legendary guitarist Slash (former guitarist of Guns'n'Roses) at Rockhal in Luxembourg. After the success of this concert, the group's reputation increased rapidly. Porn Queen performed at major rock festivals like Sonisphère, Rock A Field and NetRock, where they won the Jury prize in 2011. They were invited to open other concerts of Slash in Europe and Brazil and accompanied American guitarist Richie Kotzen (ex-member of Poison and Mr. Big) in his European tour. So far, the band has released an EP (4 songs) and their first studio album will be out at the beginning of 2013.
