This year we celebrate the one hundredth anniversary of the Republic of Poland regaining its independence, and as such the Festival is a wonderful showcase for Poland's rich traditions, its modernity and its openness to working together in an open dialogue with Luxembourg society, the city authorities, cultural institutions and the creators of culture themselves. This cyclical event promoting the culture of a country of 38 million people on the banks of the Vistula has an undoubted artistic value, but also creates an environment in which the relationship between our two nations can blossom. The Festival is the result of the collaborative efforts of the polska.lu association and the Embassy of the Republic of Poland.

I give you the 5th Polish Culture Festival; a project created in association with the Republic of Poland’s Embassy in Luxembourg and our long-standing partners – Ancien Cinema in Vianden, CCRN Neimenster, the Bourscheid commune and many others. The Festival, which caps 10 years of the activity of the polska.lu asbl organisation, is also celebrating it’s 10th anniversary this year. For this Festival we decided to show what to us, the Poles, is the most valuable – our outstanding sense of humour (MozART Group), our offbeat outlook on the world (the band Raz, Dwa, Trzy), our love of independance and deep patriotism (Film overlook 'The Path to Independence'), our faith, ardour and diligence (the 'John Paul II: Man and Culture' exposition), and also our love of beauty and respect to our hosts no matter where we find ourselves guests in the world (the 'Beautiful Luxembourg by the attendees of the photography workshops of the Polish Culture Festival' photography exposition). Because this is how we would like to be seen there where we are. There, where we want to live and share our happiness with others. I hope that this year’s Festival is worthy the occasion it has been organized for – the 100th anniversary of Polish Independence. We hope to celebrate this occasion with you!

I would like to thank the Republic of Poland’s Embassy in Luxembourg in particular, and personally – the Ambassador Piotr Wojtczak and his wife, Mrs. Iwona Wojtczak with helping in the organisation of this festival, and furthermore, Ancien Cinema in Vianden, in particular Maciej Karczewski and his wife, Hanna Karczewska, for the co-operation and incredible input to the Festival’s program, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Minister of Culture for the financial aid, all the sponsors and partners of the Festival and – last but not least – the members of polska.lu asbl and the many indivuals, without who, for their work and support, this Festival would simply have not occured.

Marcin Wierzbicki

This year's Polish Culture Festival in Luxembourg is twice as special, because it is related to a double anniversary. In 2018 we celebrate not only the 100th anniversary of Poland's independence, but also the 10th anniversary of the Festival.

We started with vigour in 2008: during the first Festival we danced with Warsaw Village Band, listened to Polish jazz, contemporary, early and club music; watched animations and photographs by young Polish artists. Year 2010 was the Chopin Year, so we were enjoying various facets of Chopin's music – its classical, jazz and folk reinterpretations; we watched films and video art dedicated to the composer. In 2013, we organized a get-together of Polish and Luxembourgish cultures and we admired common or mutually inspired works of artists from both countries. In the 2015 Festival, we held not only concerts and exhibitions, but also a treat for those who wanted to spend time creatively: comic, photo and blues workshops.

Each of the previous four Festivals were therefore different and unique, but each time we've had the same goal: to enjoy the high quality Polish culture and to show its most interesting aspects to our friends from different parts of the world. A feature shared by each Festival programme is the dominance of music, a universal language that does not need to be translated into any of the numerous languages spoken in Luxembourg. It will not be any different this year, so hope to see you at the 5th Festival of Polish Culture in Luxembourg!
